Prevention of abandonment of children with disabilities

December 3 is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Deputy Minister of Labour, Health and Social Affairs Nino Berdzuli and Nino Odisharia the head of Social Care Department met with the neonatologists of maternity homes in Tbilisi and informed them with the recommendations that the Ministry has developed about the abandonment of children with disabilities and the abandonment prevention itself.

Experience reveals that timely and correct informing of parents about the child condition significantly reduces the risk of their abandonment. It is recommended that the doctors inform parents about the children’s health condition not as a judgment, but as a possibility of reasonable decision.

One of the mothers of children with disabilities also attended the event. She shared her experience with doctors and emphasized the importance of the parents, the medical sector and the joint work of the state.
